Horse Expert?
As I was driving on a winding country road with fine scenery on a beautiful Spring day, I heard a very eloquent speaker on the radio. Being that it was a Sunday, I assumed that this silver tongued melodic voice had to be emenating from a radio evangelist. His message was inspiring. He was talking about horses, and how they want to do the right thing, but are sometimes put into situations where they have no choice but to react the way they do. He is never worried when a horse chases him out of the barn, because the horse is just trying to communicate. Horses think that their trainer is the leader of the herd, and as such, needs to be tested from time to time. As I listened to these words, I thought, "He's really drawing out this excellent parable - I mean he's putting a very fine point on it."
The parallels in humanity were so obvious, even I could see them. And then a strange thing happened. This wonderful voice asked for questions from the audience. The first question was - "other than needing a 60' diameter, what other suggestions do you have for me as I build my new corral?" As if he really was a horse expert, the radio evangelist answered the question in minute detail, carrying the entire paradigm way beyond what I thought was necessary.
He continued to take questions from the audience, and not one of them was about the application of this paradigm to lessons on the human condition. It was obvious to me at some point, that the entire audience had become part of the paradigm, and had decided to speak only in terms of horses to keep that wonderful theme alive. Sure they were drawing out lessons right and left, but never let their guard down.
Was he a horse expert, or was he a preacher? I'm sure preacher, but when you think about it - does it matter? Have you ever been confused about the nature of a program, and then just said "hey, it doesn't matter. I'll just use it for my own devices."
